As the days go by, I feel like our country is becoming more and more divided by race and racism. It seems like every day, Trump is saying some new racist thing about people he doesn't want in his country, or I read racist tweets about people who hate each other, or I hear about another person of color being shot or profiled by police. Maybe I'm being naive and maybe I'm not keeping things in perspective, but I am discouraged.
And churches are some of the most segregated places around. If you're like me, sometimes you don't even know what to do. This year's Men's Retreat can be a place to start (or continue) a discussion about race, love, America, and hope. Don't just think about doing something. Actually do something. Engage. This is a chance to put the wheels in motion. Hear from quality speakers. Spend time talking with your Christian brothers from around the conference. Build relationships. Bond with guys from your church. Don't let another year pass without taking part in this retreat. We want you and your church here. Make it happen this year.
Race. Racism. Hope. The verse for the Men's Retreat this year is "Future Hope" Prov. 23:18 "There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off." This can be a place where men from around our conference and pastors can communicate about race and racism in a way that we may not be able to in church or at the conference level. That seems like a unique opportunity. I hope.
