Faithful in Service, Further in Mission

Dear Covenant Friend,

“Joining God in God’s mission” has been the heartbeat of ministry for Gary Walter throughout the past 42 years. When he was in high school a friend from Marin Covenant Church invited Gary to the church where he heard the gospel of God’s love in Christ for the first time. Gary knew that he was meant for this relationship with God offered in love and grace. His conversion was followed by God’s call to join in God’s mission in service as a pastor, evangelist, and leader.

Now after 42 years in ministry Gary is retiring from full-time service in the Covenant. At Gather 2018 in June we will say “thank you” and celebrate Gary’s legacy of ministry that included service as a Covenant pastor, director of church planting, executive minister of church growth and evangelism, and for the past 10 years, president of the denomination.

Nothing characterizes Gary’s exceptional leadership more than his often-repeated desire to be “found faithful” going “deeper in Christ and further in mission.” As Gary has been faithful to God’s call, God has been faithful in furthering the mission of the Church.

One significant way that we can express our gratitude for Gary's faithful service is with an overflow of generosity to God. Nothing would honor Gary more than the Covenant dedicating itself to going further in mission to “see more disciples among more populations in a more caring and just world.”

“Faithful in Service, Further in Mission” is a strategic initiative fund to honor Gary Walter and to position the next president of the Covenant with resources to mobilize for mission above and beyond what is now anticipated in our denominational budget. Churches and individuals are invited to contribute additional resources for this strategic initiative that will enable the Covenant to plant even more churches, invest in even more justice and community development, broaden care and support of clergy, develop leadership training further, send new missionaries, and more. Our challenge for this initiative is to raise $1,000,000 in gifts and pledges to be given over the next two years.

We are asking you today to consider making a transformative gift through support of the “Faithful in Service, Further in Mission” campaign. As you imagine the expanded mission of the Covenant, we also encourage you to pray for the impact of these financial resources in the lives of real people in real places in the decade to come. Deeper in Christ, faithful in service, further in mission, together–these are the marks of a vibrant, growing, missional church we call the Covenant! To the glory of God and our neighbor’s good.

Start and Strengthen churches

John Wenrich and Alex Rahill traveled to an evangelical seminary in Finland in April to team teach a weeklong intensive focused on both Church Planting and Congregational Vitality. To our knowledge, this is the first time these two topics have been taught together in Europe. The invitation was extended through our partnership with the International Federation of Free Evangelical Churches (IFFEC). The teaching was enthusiastically received by a diverse student body; join us in prayer that seeds planted during the intensive would bear much fruit!

Serve Globally

On May 19, Covenant churches will host the Global 6k for Water in their neighborhoods to walk in prayer and solidarity with our friends in Congo. Women and children in Gemena, DR Congo may walk 6 kilometers to collect dirty water that could make them sick. Each $50 registration fee for the Global 6k covers the cost of providing clean water to one person in Congo, so they don't have to walk for dirty water anymore.
